Raymond Gallun was an excellent, if unheralded, science fiction writer, with a long career, stretching from the early 1930s well into the 1980s. This mid-50s novelette is one of the better first contact stories of the era, a convincing depiction of the first visit of an alien spacecraft to the earth and the aftermath of that visit. A number of Gallun's stories are available as free downloads for the Kindle, but many of the others are not his best work. I would recommend starting here if you don't know Gallun's work; if this whets your appetite for more, try Asteroid of Fear (another freebie; not as good as this, but not bad) or A First Glimpse And Other Science Fiction Classics (an excellent Gallun anthology).
