The Summer Garden Paullina Simons 9780007162499 Books

I picked up this book because of the title The Summer Garden. I thought it would be a great beach read and a sprawling history starting in WWII. Instead I found myself slogging along with Tatiana and Alexander and their small son Anthony as they try to regroup and find happiness despite their tragic past fighting the Nazis in the war, and trying to regroup after Tatiana rescues Alexander from a German prison camp. In America they try to find the place they will both fit, and capture the love they once knew in a more innocent time before all of the tragedy nearly took their lives as it did those they loved.

I think had I known this was part of a trilogy and read the other books in the series I would have been much happier with this book. I found as being separated from the knowlegde of their past through various snippets of stories of different people of their past and how they relate in present to their situation and surroundings. Some of the book is very gripping while other parts drag through their various sexual problems and longings for the love they once shared.

While I read much about the strong willful character of Tatiana, I found her to be overly sentimental though she'd been through so much. I found Alexander, rightly to be morose, but the boy is stuck between the two as he grows with his physically and emotionally wounded parents.

Since the previous books have gotten such great reviews. I think I should go back and read them and then read this one to put it all in perspective. As a stand alone novel, I don't think it's worth the time.

The Summer Garden Paullina Simons 9780007162499 Books Reviews

So, this is it. I'm assuming you've read the first 2 books. If you haven't then what's the point of starting this. I wouldn't advise it. These are not stand alone books. It's a saga that takes place over many years. Start at the beginning or don't start at all.

Well, this is the part where they are finally in America & living there for the rest of their lives. You'd think all their troubles would be over - but no. If that was true, then there'd be no reason to have another whole book.

Many things happen & I'm not into telling spoilers. What kind of work does Alexander get into? Is Tatiana still a nurse or does she quit & stay home with her son? Do they have more kids?

Do they live in New York or end up someplace else? Who are their friends? These are the things that are answered here.

Tatiana still is a 'super' woman. Age doesn't deter her any. She's always gorgeous, strong, smart & perfect. The one thing that I don't like about her is that she allows Alexander to be mean to her at times. He can be emotionally and physically abusive and it's irritating. Of course back in those days women just took it and didn't say much to their spouse or their family or anybody. So, as far as that goes, it's correct for the times. However, you'd think with her personality she'd put her foot down with him. And if he loved her so much then why does he act like a total jerk at times? Hmmm? Here she went back to find him & did everything in her power to save his life - and he's not grateful to her forever after? Come on. It's hard to like him when he's like this. Really.

This book also brings us more into the future with Alexander & Tatiana's son, Anthony, and he's grown up and is a soldier too. In Viet Nam. History repeats itself and he is captured & needs rescuing too. Does his Mom go for him like she did for his father? Read it and find out. Maybe he doesn't get rescued at all & doesn't make it. That would be a major tragedy for the couple wouldn't it. Would it split them apart for good?

Well, I'm not going to tell you anything. But it does make me think...hey these books would make a great series (like GOT's or Outlander) or a movie. There's plenty of action & beautiful scenery & history. Any producers out there looking for something for the next HBO or Starz hits?

People who review these books like to compare each book to the other ones. But I don't do that because to me, they're all one big story. I can't say if I enjoyed one book over another because I view them as one entire work.

They are long books & get very detailed. If you like books that have main characters & then a lot of side characters too & lots of action and there's never a dull moment - then you might like these 3.

Like a real family - these folks really aren't perfect. They have flaws like the rest of us. But I think most would agree - their life was most extraordinary & unlike our own. Hence, why it's great fiction!
This trilogy is absolutely my new favorite all time read. Words cannot express how much I love this series.

Book 1&3 are my favorite but that's not to say book 2 was not good.

This book continues with the lives of Tatia and Alexander in America. They've survived the war, but now they must face a new obstacle. A new reality. The life of marriage in a new world. They go through the struggles of a marriage. Being married myself, I can def relate to their issues in this book. Man oh man. This book was filled with drama and angst. I was so angry at Tatia at times and then so angry at Alexander. But as always they pull through everything because their love for each is true.

Tatia has to be one of my favorite book heroine. She is brave, smart, caring, loving, strong and selfless. She is beyond amazing. This woman is a super woman. She has to be after everything she's been through. And God, is she loyal and faithful. I just love her so much even though at times she is too naive for her own good.

And Alexander, I love him just as much. Boy does he f up in this book but he does redeem himself. His love for Tatia is just surreal. I think I love that most about him. As much as Tatia loves him, he loves her just as much. And we all know how much she loves him if you've read book 1&2. She goes above and beyond for him. But Alexander proves he loves her just as much even though he is not perfect. He believes she to be and she can save him and his soul.

Their love has to be the greatest love I've read so far. And I'm an avid reader. I read 3-4 books per week depending on the length of the book. Words just can't explain how much I love their story. A story of true love, one that endures the worse possible situations, finds each other no matter what or where and a love that never wavers or cease.

I highly recommend this book to all my avid romance novel readers. You will not be disappointed. My only regret is that I took too long to read the book. I saw it in my recommendations but I put off reading it because I was afraid it would suck me in like it did. I was afraid I would become obsessive and read 24 hours around the clock. The kind of crazy you get when you start an all encompassing book. This book will consume you. It will rip you apart, make u cry, make you laugh, give you hope, make you believe. It will leave you breathless. Do not stall buy it and read it!!
