Part of the fun of Danger Tastes Dreadful is in entering Langhinrich’s creatively imagined universe of trolls, giants and dragons: Bernie’s uncanny ability to smell and taste situations, for example, and the differences between Troldfolk, like Bernie’s family, who live under a bridge, and Huldrefolk, hill trolls like Tish and her granny. The peculiar foods that trolls prefer to eat may surprise you. 

Bernie and Tish have a very relatable way of talking to each other as they reason out practical solutions to their obstacles. But Bernie considers Tish smarter and more competent, the friend he has always relied on. He lacks a sure sense of self-confidence. Thus Bernie’s journey to Mt. Dreadful necessarily takes him inward, too, as the stakes grow higher and the bitter danger intensifies. 

Danger may taste dreadful, but, for readers of Bernie's story - the first in a planned series - his adventure tastes delightful. I highly recommend this book for middle grade readers.

There is something to be said about following the fantastic adventure of two young trolls. Bernie and Tish discover bravery, ingenuity, and unlikely friendships as they embark on a quest to save their family and friends from danger. I was immersed in their world, balking at their diet (newts, bugs, and salamanders?!) but loving every detail. It took me back to being a young girl and when I absorbed everything fantasy I could get my hands on!
I've always loved journey stories. Add in giants and trolls and I'm a happy camper.
Danger tastes dreadful is a fast read. The story is engaging from the start and once I picked the book, I couldn’t stop till I finished. The style of writing is easy and flows readily. I am not too much into animated characters but Bernie is quite a compelling troll and I identified with him from the start – his fears, challenges, and need for help. And like him, I thought Tish was the strong one but soon realize Bernie has to be.
I enjoyed the growth of the characters and joined the trolls on a rescue mission. Awesome experience. Several scary moments that got my heart thumping, shows great pacing in the story. I look forward to a sequel. These trolls have spirit! And I guess it’s true – trolls are strong and can do anything. I enjoyed the book thoroughly!
Loved this book! An exciting story that is packed full of adventure and action. Reminded me a bit of The Hobbit combined with the Troll movie. A young troll named Bernie must face his fears when he tastes danger one day in the woods. And when his family disappears from their home under the bridge, it is up to him and his friend Tish to set out on a rescue mission and save his family before it's too late. A very easy read from start to finish. Well paced with a fun world to explore.
When I think of trolls, I think of the frozen brutes in the Hobbit. But what if trolls were actually more like hobbits themselves, gentle creatures living in caves behind waterfalls with their grandmothers? Danger Tastes Dreadful follows two young trolls as they try to rescue one of their parents from giants. They travel to a distant mountain, where they find that giants may not be the real problem, but something worse. Young readers not yet old enough for Tolkien will delight in this exciting, sweet fantasy!
