Daring the Highlander The Legacy of MacLeod Book 2 edition by Laurin Wittig Romance eBooks

Ailing is the youngest son of the chief of his clan. In the first book of the series his sister ran the castle and was considered a shrew for it. His older brothers were going to marry her off, and his oldest brother was conspiring to overthrow King Robert.
That brother was killed, the other three put in the kings army, and he was told to go home, tell his father that if he wasn't made chief the king would take over and kick them all out, making the whole clan homeless.
Marainn was a young widow who had vowed never to marry again because she was disillusioned by that marriage. Her brother in law Tamas was a good friend to Ailing and they helped him in his quest. Her developing love and his support helped him in his quest.
There was a lot of intrigue in the book, and it was interesting to see how Ailing developed his abilities with the help of a mercenary who was able to teach him to fight and strategize and to be able to gain the support of his people.

Daring the Highlander The Legacy of MacLeod Book 2 edition by Laurin Wittig Romance eBooks Reviews

The story of Ailig and Moraine was extremely interesting. It held my interest from beginning to end. The lovely part was that I did not (as I usually do) discern the plot - I found myself not quite knowing what would happen. That does not happen often and I adore authors who can keep me in the dark even a little bit. I fell in love with Ailig immediately, because I support the underdog. My heart hurt for the insults hurled at him and reveled in his intelligence when he refused to retaliate for the insult, but step by step made those around him aware of his worth. Moraine was a little like most heroines and a little self-centered by not admitting her fascination with Ailig. With the lifestyle of that period being what it was, women's worth not recognized, I could accept her reaction. I was delighted to see the sub-plots unfold and that the two lovers won out in the end. I will re-read this book again and again, especially when I need a lift.
This was close to 5 stars for me because I did like both the H/h and the story had suspense. What lowered by rating was the ending. The h came up with most of the plans near the end. That was a disappointment to me, that the H who was strong and handled things well, couldn't come up with a plan to save the clan. I am not saying women can't hold their own, but he was trying to prove himself and he slipped in my opinion.

There is romance here that builds slowly and mildly descriptive lovemaking outside of marriage.

There are several surprises that I didn't see coming and that is always a plus when an author can keep me surprised.

I enjoyed the secondary character's too. We do get HEA and no cliffhanger. I am not going into the blurb as many have explained it, just what you may discover reading it. (ljb)
Ailig is the youngest and despised son of Laird MacLeod. His eldest brother lost his life in an attempt to kill the Scottish king, Robert the Bruce. Because they were also involved, his three other brothers were shipped off to fight in wars from which it was certain they would not return. Further, the Bruce ordered Ailig to depose his father and take over the clan or all their people would all be “hunted down and put to the sword.” His father adamantly refuses to step down, and Ailig must win over the clan. Aiding him in this is Morainn, a young widow he meets upon his return from the king. Their attraction is immediate, but Ailig needs to overcome her fears before she would consent to be his wife. What I particularly enjoyed was that while Morainn has those fears, in all else she was a capable, clever, active participant in taking back the castle when it is overrun by their enemies.
I don't know if it was a good thing to re-read the first book in this series, 'Charming the Shrew'. The trouble was it was years ago that I read it and I didn't remember much. Since this is a sequel of that one, I thought it would be a good idea to refresh my memory of the characters. The point is that this one didn't compare well. There was way too much introspection on the part of the main characters. It really got on my nerves to the point that I was playing Solitaire on my ipad in between chapters (not a good sign). I really hate using the word boring in a review but this book pretty much was. In short the H is the youngest brother in the clan but because of his older brothers plotting against the king, the oldest one is dead and the others are serving in the king's army. The H is charged by the king to return to his clan and insist that his father, the clan chief, step down and that the H take over. In order to do this, he will have to try and bring his clan around to support him. The h is a young widow living in a cottage on the castle's premises. She is persuaded by the H to at first come and take over the kitchens and then later, to take over as chatelaine. The two become close as a result.

It was hard reading about how the H had very little support within his own clan, despite being the 'good' brother. I read somewhere in the other reviews that a reader didn't understand why the H didn't have the support of the clan champion and I have to admit that was puzzling. I'm also not a fan of the premise where the h doesn't want to remarry under any circumstances. Here it just felt wishy washy and stupid as her reasons were not convincing, but boy did we read and read and read her thoughts about why she didn't want to. An effort to convince us maybe?

Anyway it's free on KU so if you've read the first, you may like to try this one.
Updated 10/11/2017 I listened to the Audible version of this book and enjoyed it a lot. Mostly it was down to the narrator who was brilliant. I loved his accents and varying voices for the characters. I can definitely recommend this one to listen too. The good news is that the audible version is free on KU.
